I finally managed to tool up and get someone to make proper CR fuel tanks.
Having been a bit of a CR anorak over most of my classic bike life I think I can safely say I know whats correct etc, I realise my race bike does not fully follow originality as it had to win races and so a few changes away from factory spec were necessary. But I tried to keep it still resembling a CR,
when building the continuation Smith Honda CR’s, I found that it was nearly impossible to get hold of the fuel tanks, there are a lot of misinformed people out there, tanks with knee cutouts, missing chin pad recess, no cutouts for coil clearance, and the little sump for keeping the fuel around fuel take off missing.
delivery time for a correct tank made by the master was a year, and I thought this was unacceptable
So I got on the computer and modeled the tank, then developed out some pattens and had a wooden buck made,
I then found a little gem of a fabricator who fancied trying his hand at these for me, how hard can it be after all if he can make E type jag bonnets, then a fuel tank no problem.
How wrong could I be, The hours that go into these tanks to do them right is quite high, There is a lot of shaping going on in the tunnel to clear frame and coils etc. but the end result is spot on exactly as they should be. He now has it all worked out and has all the tooling made so can make to order.
